Born on February 20, 1992, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Hermann Kamté studied Physical Sciences at the University of Ngaoundéré before joining EAMAU in 2011, where he earned a Master’s degree in Architecture in 2016. During his studies, he completed several academic and professional internships in Togo and Cameroon where he collaborated on major projects, notably General Directorate of Taxation and Mundi Complex With Urbatech Conseils. In 2016, he founded HKA | Hermann Kamté & Associates and won his first international competition at Tirana Architecture Week as well as recognition with Lagos Wooden Tower, marking the firm’s deliberate shift from local practice to international architectural discourse. Since then, HKA has developed as a platform for both theoretical reflection and built experimentation. Working across architecture, landscape, interior, and furniture design, Hermann Kamté adopts a multidisciplinary and research-driven approach, viewing architectural projects as complex systems where disciplines intersect. His early career was marked by several competition distinctions, followed from 2017 by international recognition for innovative, sustainable, and ecologically conscious projects integrating advanced design technologies. An award-winning architect, Hermann Kamté received major distinctions including the WAFX Prize (2017), American Architecture Prize (2017), Rethinking the Future Awards, A’ Design Award, WA Awards, Eurasian Prize (2018), Archi Awards Africa (2018), and Taipei International Design Awards (2018). He gained global visibility through exhibitions and conferences across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and North America, notably with the research project “Lagos’s Wooden Tower”, exhibited at Roca London Gallery and presented as Africa’s first proposed tall timber building at CTBUH events. His work has been widely published in international media including The Architectural Review, Financial Times, CNN, CTBUH Journal, and African Design Magazine. Beyond practice, Hermann Kamté is an active speaker, juror, and contributor to global architectural debates, having delivered keynote speeches alongside world leaders and leading architects at forums such as Africa 2018 Forum, LafargeHolcim Forums, CTBUH Conferences, 10th Wood Conference and Architecture ZA. He has also served as an international jury member and guest lecturer at major academic and professional institutions. In December 2018, Hermann Kamté delivered a keynote address at the Africa 2018 Forum (YED Presidential Dialogues) in Sharm El Sheikh, alongside Presidents Paul Kagame and Abdel Fattah Al Sisi. On this occasion, he was also recognized among the Africans Young Leader by the Government of Egypt, COMESA, IFC (International Finance Corporation), and the Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation.
Hermann Kamté
It is within this tension; between singularity and coherence, between emotion and rigor, between local context and universal dialogue; that my work takes shape. Not to produce identical objects, but to explore, project after project, how architecture can create meaning without repeating itself.

SUSTAINABILITY

HKA believes architecture should perform, not merely represent. Projects begin with root problems rather than predefined forms, treating constraints—site, budget, regulations, and time—as drivers of innovation. The studio prioritizes collaboration over authorship, designing processes rather than imposing solutions. Responsibility, implementation, and construction are embraced as creative acts, ensuring continuity between concept and realization. Form and function are not opposed but unified through performance, producing architecture that is precise, adaptable, and context-specific.
Inspired by nature’s processes rather than its forms, HKA conceives architecture as an experience shaped by light, air, material, and time. Design seeks simplicity, clarity, and human scale, particularly in dense or vertical environments. Architecture is understood as evolving over time—designed to adapt, endure, and remain relevant. Through research and built work, HKA aims to contribute to a more sustainable, human-centered, and resilient built environment.
HKA | Hermann Kamte & Associates is an international architecture and design practice founded in 2017. The studio operates across architecture, urbanism, landscape, interior and product design, combining research, technology, and sustainability within an integrated process. Active across Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia, HKA develops projects rooted in sustainable development and contemporary design, using advanced digital tools to deliver precise, contextual, and forward-looking solutions. Each project is approached as a unique system, shaped by research into function, material, use, and environment. A strong focus on timber architecture drives ongoing research into resilient, low-carbon alternatives to conventional construction, positioning HKA at the intersection of innovation, ecology, and urban transformation.
HKA is a research-driven studio engaged throughout the entire project lifecycle, from concept to delivery. Design decisions are informed by 3D modeling, parametric design, simulations, and performance testing, allowing rapid iteration and informed choices. Complex geometries are developed through custom algorithms and parametric workflows, followed by in-depth experimentation on materials, construction methods, and spatial systems. BIM is central to the practice—not as a tool, but as a collaborative process integrating design, coordination, cost control, sustainability analysis, and lifecycle thinking. Climatic and contextual data are embedded from the earliest stages to optimize environmental performance and long-term efficiency
